Thomas M. van Gulik is Professor em. of Surgery at the Amsterdam University Medical Centers
in the Netherlands. He was trained at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam and after surgical fellowships at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and at Pittsburgh Medical Center, he specialized in surgery of the liver, biliary tract and the pancreas. His main clinical interest focuses on diagnosis and multidisciplinary management of bile duct tumors, in particular perihilar cholangiocarcinoma. He supervised the Surgical laboratory at the University of Amsterdam and directed research on risk factors of liver resection, including obstructive jaundice and biliary drainage.
He supervised 60 PhD dissertations and is (co)author of 750+ articles in international and national journals.
