Cornelis Jan Hadde van de Velde, born in The Netherlands on June 5, 1951, is married and has 2 children. He received a PhD (cum laude) in breast cancer in 1977. He received his training at the Leiden University Medical Center in Leiden and at the M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston in surgery and surgical oncology until 1982. In 1985 he was a visiting Professor at the Seoul National University Hospital in Korea and at the National Cancer Center Hospital in Tokyo, Japan. He was appointed clinical Professor of Surgery at the Leiden University Medical Center in 1987. He was made a Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians (Glasgow) and American College of Surgeons. He is also an Honorary Member of 12 National Surgical Societies. His primary areas of research interests include breast, colorectal, gastric cancer and endocrine tumors. He is also a member and Past President of the Netherlands Royal Academy of Sciences, medical section He founded and was the first Chairman of the Dutch Colorectal Cancer Group, the Dutch Gastric Cancer Group – and organized the first European Multidisciplinary Colorectal Conferences from 2000 onwards – and the Dutch Breast Cancer Group, Past President of the European Society of Surgical Oncology and 2012-2014 President of ECCO, the European Cancer Organization as well as President of the ECCO Congress 2013 in Amsterdam. In 2007 he founded the European Registration of Cancer Care (EURECCA), a quality assurance structure in Europe on colorectal and other cancers. In 2013 he received a Royal Dutch Honor: a Knighthood of the Netherlands Lion.
As supervisor of more than 90Ph.D. theses, coordinator of 14 projects of the Netherlands Cancer Foundation (3 present), coordinator of 6 Health Insurance Fund Projects (Liver metastases, follow up, gastric cancer surgery, gastric cancer chemotherapy, rectal cancer surgery, radiotherapy and blood transfusion), coordinator of 6 European randomized breast cancer studies and coordinator of 6 European randomized colorectal cancer studies.
Has presently authored more than 1000 publications. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Dutch Textbook of Oncology since 25 years, was the Associate Editor of the EJSO and is Editor of the Oxford Textbook of Oncology.
