Dr Naureen Starling is a Consultant Medical Oncologist at The Royal Marsden, specialising in the treatment of gastrointestinal (GI) cancers. She is a Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer within the Division of Clinical Studies at the Institute of Cancer Research.

Dr Starling graduated from University College London with first-class honours in Physiology (BSc), and distinctions in Clinical Pharmacology/Therapeutics and Pathology. She undertook general medical training at University College Hospital and Northwick Park/St Mark’s hospitals and specialist training in Medical Oncology at The Royal Marsden. Her postgraduate degree at the ICR focused on the genomics and therapeutics of oesophageal cancer.

Her research interests in gastrointestinal cancers (oesophageal, gastric, pancreatic, neuroendocrine and colorectal) are focussed on earlier phase clinical trials, novel therapeutics and the delivery of individualised medicine to patients with gastrointestinal cancers. She is the principal investigator on numerous international clinical trials of novel drugs in oesophago-gastric, pancreatic and colorectal cancer. Dr Starling is a member several multi-centre clinical trial steering and safety review committees. She has been a lead or co-applicant on a number of successful peer-reviewed research grant applications.

She is the Associate Director of Clinical Research at The Royal Marsden and Clinical Lead for The Royal Marsden’s West Wing Clinical Research Centre. She is the Upper GI Lead for the South London Cancer Research Network, serves on the UK National Cancer Research Institute oesophago-gastric sub-group and has been a member of the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) Oesophago-gastric Cancer Guideline Committee. She has also acted as a clinical expert in oesophago-gastric cancer for NICE and is a clinical expert for Pancreatic Cancer UK. She has recently joined the Assembly of the EORTC.

Dr Starling also holds educational roles, including the NIHR Training Lead for the RM/Institute of Cancer Research Biomedical Research Centre, Deputy Training Program Director for the Royal Marsden Medical Oncology Training Programme, Committee member of the pan-London specialist training committee and sits on the UK’s Project Steering Committee for Medical Oncology
