MERCHANT, Ms Zoe

Zoe is the AHP Clinical Lead for the HSJ award-winning Prehab4Cancer and recovery programme (www.prehab4cancer.co.uk), the first region wide prehabilitation and rehabilitation service provided for people affected by cancer in the world. Her clinical background is as a complex rehabilitation specialist Occupational Therapist, having working in both physical and mental health settings, acute and community.

In her day job she works for the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust as the Targeted Lung Health Check Programme Manager, leading the lung cancer screening programme in Greater Manchester. She is an invited member of the Department of Health & Social Care Lung Cancer Screening Standards Task and Finish group.

She is the AHP/Qualitative research lead and one of the foundng members of the EMBRaCE-GM (Enhanced Monitoring for Better Recovery and Cancer Experience in Greater Manchester) research group. She has authored a chapter on frailty and cancer prehabilitation/rehabilitation for Springer, contributed to the Macmillan Prehab guidance (2019), authored several other journal articles related to cancer prehabilitation and to lung cancer screening, and collaborated with CRUK to produce their nationally available prehab resources (https://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/treatment/prehabilitation/what-is-prehabilitation). She has produced a case study and other resources for the Macmillan/HEE Prehabilitation rehabilitation and personalised care for people living with cancer (PRosPer) e-learning programme (https://www.e-lfh.org.uk/programmes/prosper/).

She represents the Royal College of Occupational Therapists in national prehab discussions, speaking on behalf of the Community Rehabilitation Alliance, at the conservative party conference in 2021, lobbying for the #RighttoRehab. She hosted a visit from HRH Princess Anne to the Prehab4Cancer service in 2021 and has recently appeared on the BBC1 Morning Live television programme promoting the benefits of exercise and other interventions for people affected by cancer. Zoe was the Chair of the GM Cancer alliance AHP Advisory board between 2018 and 2021 and is also an invited member of the Macmillan national AHP Expert Advisory Group.
