Prof. Dr. Gert De Meerleer is staff member at the department of Radiation Oncology at the University Hospitals in Leuven, Belgium. He graduated in medicine at the University of Ghent in 1994. Following an internship at the Ghent University Hospital, he became a specialist in radiotherapy in 1999. From 1999 to 2000, he was part-time resident at the department of Radiotherapy and Oncology at the O.L.V. Hospital in Aalst, Belgium. In 2000, he obtained his PhD at the University of Ghent, where he also worked as a post-doctoral research fellow until 2006. From 2006 till 2016, he became staff member at the department of radiotherapy and experimental oncology at Gent University Hospital and full professor at Gent University. In 2016, he moved to the University Hospitals in Leuven, where he was appointed head of clinics and full professor. Prof. Dr. De Meerleer is responsible for the multidisciplinary treatment of urological and gynaeco-pelvic malignancies. He also coordinates multiple fundamental and clinical research funds concerning prostate cancer especially in the field of locally advanced and oligometastatic cancer. He was the first director of the European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ESTRO) multidisciplinary teaching course onprostate cancer and teacher at the different other ESTRO teaching courses. He is a frequently invited speaker on international congresses and symposia. Prof. Dr. De Meerleer is (co-)author of over 100 peer-reviewed papers and has received several grants and awards for his research.
