Heather is both a registered general nurse and a registered sick children’s nurse. Completion of oncology training at Northern Ireland’s cancer centre was the catalyst for a chosen career in cancer care and subsequently the development of cancer services. In 1986 she was appointed as the first Breast Care Nurse in Northern Ireland and remained in this role until 1995 when she took up post as an Oncology Nurse Advisor with Zeneca Pharmaceuticals. In 1999 she joined Macmillan Cancer Support, and over this past eighteen years has enjoyed a variety of roles within the organisation, culminating in her current post as Head of Macmillan Services for Northern Ireland. In this role she seeks to influence strategically and has been instrumental in leveraging significant investment and service improvements for the region, such as the Transforming Cancer Follow-Up Programme and significant investments in the Specialist Cancer Nursing workforce. She is a lay/community member of the South Eastern Local Commissioning Group of the Northern Ireland Health and Social Care Board, sits on the Northern Ireland Cancer Network Board and is a council member of Northern Ireland Cancer Registry. She also sits on several committees for the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety. In 2013 she was awarded the MBE for services rendered to healthcare. Heather is married with three daughters.
